INTRODUCTION :-
Ø Arhar is the second most important pulse crop of the country after gram.
Ø It is mainly eaten in the form of 'Dal'.
Ø Arhar seeds are also rich in iron, iodine, essential amino acids like
lysine, threonine, cysteine and arginine etc.
Ø Arhar is a protein rich staple food. It contains about 22 percent protein,
which is almost three times more than cereals.
Ø The ability of tur to produce high economic yields under soil moisture
deficit makes it an important crop in rainfed and arid agriculture.
Ø Green leaves and tops of plants provide excellent fodder and are used as
green manure.
Ø It is an important food of South India where rice is the main food grain.
The nutritional deficiency of rice can be fulfilled to some extent by including
arhar grains in the diet. It provides protein, B vitamins, calcium and
phosphorus.
